Twitter Chats in the Classroom with Ms. Ruel (@ms_ruel)
Looking for ways to connect & engage students in thoughtful discussion is a hard thing to do for any teacher. Recently, Amanda has made this endeavor much easier on herself with live Twitter chats in the classroom. Not only is she seeing a spark in engagement and motivation, but she's creating authentic ways to teach digital citizenship lessons. Students are communicating and facilitating discussions while being mindful of their digital footprint. You can follow their conversations using the hashtag #oobhsmicro See Amanda's take, a recent script, & resources to get you started below:
"Technology is a huge part of a teenager's life. Being a teacher, I have been trying to think of different ways to engage students while they are also learning. I figured since students are constantly on social media, I would try using Twitter to engage students in a discussion. Instead of giving the students a paper with questions they need to answer, I would ask the questions on Twitter and the students would answer the questions on Twitter. They can also see what other students answered, which turned into a great class discussion. All students are motivated and doing more work. One student dropped a study hall to take Microeconomics because of Twitter. When asked about his thoughts on Twitter in class, Dylan said, 'I think that using Twitter for the class is a lot more beneficial to our learning because I can go back and look at the discussion.' I have done two Twitter chats now, and both have gone really well. The students come into class asking to do a Twitter chat." - Amanda
